Target Audience The course is suitable for anybody wanting an introduction to statistical data analysis using SPSS. The course assumes a familiarity with using Windows applications and the elementary statistical concepts.

Course Objectives At the end of the course, you will have:

  • Knowledge of main types of graphs and their use in statistics
  • An introduction to exploratory data analysis
  • Understanding of some common statistical tests and their interpretation
  • Experience of using SPSS for statistical data analysis

The course consists of two full days, with lectures on statistical topics and practical laboratory classes, using suitable examples to illustrate the techniques introduced in the lectures.

Course Structure

Day 1: Data entry and manipulation

  • Categorical and continuous data
  • Variables: definition, labelling, transforming and recoding
  • Simple plots and descriptive statistics
  • Exploratory data analysis: box-plots, histograms and normality plots
  • Cross tabulation and the chi-square test

Day 2: Basic statistical data analysis

  • Statistical testing and estimation
  • One sample tests:t-test, sign and signed rank tests
  • Two-sample tests: t-test, Mann-Whitney test
  • One-way ANOVA
  • Correlation and simple regression

Course Leader Prof Elena Kulinskaya currently holds the Aviva Chair in Statistics at UEA. She has extensive experience of research, teaching and consulting in many areas of statistics. Previously she was the Director of Statistical Advisory Service at Imperial College London. This popular course was developed and successfully taught by Elena at Imperial, and now we offer it at UEA.
