Inspired by Harvard Business Review’s “How to Gain Credibility When You Have Little Experience”

Starting out in your career can feel like a bit of a paradox: you’re expected to show up confidently – but often feel like the least experienced person in the room. Sound familiar?

The truth is, credibility isn’t something you’re given – it’s something you can build. And you don’t need 10 years on your CV to be taken seriously. What you need is presence, clarity, and a few smart habits that show people you’re worth listening to.

Here are five practical ways to build credibility early in your career – whether you’re in your first job, on a placement, or just figuring out where you want to be.

1. Start by being prepared

Being reliable and informed will take you further than trying to appear impressive.

  • Do your research before meetings.
  • Know who’s in the room and what’s being discussed.
  • Take notes – and follow up with thoughtful questions.

People notice preparation. It signals that you care, and it builds trust fast.

2. Ask better questions

You don’t need all the answers. But asking smart, open, well-timed questions shows curiosity, not cluelessness.

  • “Can you help me understand how that fits into the wider picture?”
  • “What would success look like for this?”
  • “Is there a way I could support that process?”

Good questions build bridges – they show you’re switched on and eager to learn.

3. Be consistent with your communication

Whether it’s a project update or replying to a Slack message – how you communicate affects how others experience your professionalism.

  • Be clear, concise and respectful of people’s time.
  • Don’t disappear when things get tricky – honesty builds credibility too.
  • Keep your commitments, or flag issues early.

Consistency = credibility. Show people they can count on you.

4. Bring value where you can

You don’t have to be the expert. But you can offer value – by listening closely, sharing an outside perspective, or simply bringing energy and clarity to a task.

  • Volunteer to take notes or summarise actions.
  • Spot small improvements or missed details.
  • Offer to test, check, draft, or prototype.

You don’t have to do everything – just do something well.

5. Let your curiosity speak louder than your ego

People respect those who want to grow. Not those who pretend they’ve already made it.

  • Share your learning process.
  • Be generous in giving credit to others.
  • Stay open to feedback – and act on it.

Credibility isn’t about perfection – it’s about showing up with purpose and humility.
