French isn’t just a language—it’s a feeling. French is spoken in over 30 countries, it unlocks art, food, travel, culture and it sounds elegant—even simple sentences feel expressive.
Let’s get you speaking and enjoying it in minutes.
Bonjour(bohn-zhoor) = Hello / Good morning
Enchanté! (Nice to meet you) Merci(mehr-see) = Thank you S’il vous plaît(seel voo pleh) = Please
Au revoir(oh ruh-vwahr) = Good bye
Try saying this out loud: Bonjour, merci, s’il vous plaît. You’ve already mastered politeness in French
Now let’s unlock a conversation:
Je m’appelle Florence. (zhuh mah-pell Florence) → My name is Florence.
Breakdown:
Je = I
m’appelle = call myself
Now let’s ask for something useful:
Où est le café ? (oo eh luh ka-fay) → Where is the café?
Breakdown:
Où = Where
est = is
le = the
Now let’s put that together:
Bonjour(Hello / Good morning)
Enchanté! (Nice to meet you)
Je m’appelle Florence. (My name is Florence.)
Où est le café ? (Where is the café?) s’il vous plaît(please)
[The nice French (or Belgian) person points and says La bas (la ba’ – over there)
Merci (Thank you)
Au revoir (Good-bye)
French isn’t hard—it’s different, and once your ear adjusts, it becomes addictive.
Whatever your motivation, whether you are starting from new and always wanted to learn the language, whether you are more experienced and want to develop your conversation, you might be looking for guidance in-country with healthcare or house buying or perhaps you are looking for support for your business, give me a call with no obligation on 07930 444 078 or email me on [email protected] anytime.
Age UK Norwich has celebrated national recognition
at the 2026 GSK IMPACT Awards on the 13th of May, after being named
as one of ten winners from across the UK.
The awards, run by GSK in partnership with The
King’s Fund, recognise outstanding small and medium-sized charities working to
improve health and wellbeing in communities nationwide.
Following a rigorous assessment process and a
record number of applications, Age UK Norwich was selected as one of this
year’s winners in recognition of its work supporting older people across
Greater Norwich and surrounding areas to stay healthy, independent and
connected.
At the awards ceremony, the overall winner was
announced as The Green House
charity with
Age UK Norwich congratulating the organisation on its achievement.
Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich,
said:
“We’re incredibly
proud to stand with the other ten winners of the 2026 GSK IMPACT Awards. Being
recognised alongside other outstanding charities from across the UK is a huge
achievement, highlighting the importance of the people we serve. This recognition
reflects the power and potential of the VCSE sector to transform the health and
wellbeing of our communities – it’s fantastic that The King’s Fund and GSK are
helping to highlight this potential, and the long-standing dedication and hard
work of our staff, volunteers and partners we work with.”
He added:
“We would also like
to congratulate The Green House on being named the overall winner. The awards
showcase the extraordinary work charities are doing every day to support
communities across the UK, and we are honoured to have been recognised
alongside such inspiring organisations.”
Age UK Norwich was recognised particularly for its
health coaching and falls prevention work, which combines personalised support,
wellbeing advice and innovative GaitSmart technology to help older people
maintain confidence, mobility and independence. In 2024/25, the charity
supported almost 8,000 people and delivered thousands of welfare checks,
befriending calls and community activities across Norwich.
Blending exercise with friendship and fun, our sessions are proving a lifeline for people aged 50 and over across the city. As Isabel, an Age UK Norwich Health Coach, explained on the programme, walking football keeps the essence of the game while making it accessible: “It pretty much is football, but there are some slightly different rules… you must always have one foot on the ground and the ball mustn’t get kicked higher than anyone’s head.”
The slower pace is exactly what makes it so effective. Open to anyone over 50, our group includes players ranging from newly retired participants to those in their 80s. “It’s a great way for them to keep mobile, keep sociable, just keep your mind active,” Isabel said.
The BBC feature highlighted the benefits that go far beyond physical health. The structure of the sessions – warm-up, match play, and time for tea and chat – creates a welcoming environment, especially for those who may feel nervous about joining new groups. “You’re interacting socially with people, but it’s not free form… it’s easy to follow a pattern,” Isabel explained. “And then afterwards, there’s half an hour tea and chat.”
Regular attendees spoke warmly about the impact our club has had on their lives.
Alan, who has been attending for around four years, said: “I can’t necessarily play normal football anymore, so I found this and it’s great… it’s more than just football. We all have a great laugh… about 20 odd of us from different walks of life… and we just have a good time.”
For Mark, it captures something even simpler: “It’s just like being a kid again… having a kick about on the park. No pressure. No aggro.”
Others are drawn in by the social side. Kevin, who is new to our club, said: “That’s more why I’m here – the social aspect rather than actually winning any cups… if you stop work, you lose track of people and you need to make a new social network.”
That sense of connection is echoed across the group. Terry highlighted the “camaraderie and activity and exercise,” while Pat described it as “a good bunch of people… it gets you out during the day.” The friendships often extend beyond the pitch too, with members meeting socially throughout the year.
Importantly, our sessions are inclusive and open to all, regardless of experience. Debbie, a long-time participant, encourages anyone to give it a try: “Anyone, women or men, who have either played football before… or people who’ve never really played football before and just want to come and have an enjoyable morning.”
For many, the impact on wellbeing is immediate and visible. Isabel describes it as the “walking football grin” – the unmistakable smile participants leave with after each session.
At Age UK Norwich, we see first-hand the difference this makes. From improved mobility to boosted confidence and new friendships, the impact is clear.
As one player simply put it: “It’s great fun… especially when you score loads of goals.”
For many older people in Lowestoft, knowing where to turn for advice and support can feel overwhelming, especially during times of rising living costs, health concerns or loneliness. A local service from Age UK Norwich is helping to change that, offering friendly, practical support to people aged 50 and over through its OASIS programme.
The OASIS Service (Older Adult Support and Information Service), delivered by Age UK Norwich, offers free tailored support for people aged 50 and over across the Lowestoft area.
The service provides practical advice, information and one-to-one support on a wide range of issues that can affect later life, including maximising income through benefits checks, help with warm home discounts and energy efficiency, housing rights, home adaptations, care options and support for people experiencing isolation or loneliness.
Staff understand that asking for help can sometimes feel daunting, which is why the service has been designed to be approachable, friendly and flexible. Support is available face-to-face, over the telephone and, in some cases, through home visits for help with form filling and applications.
Residents can also speak to the team in person at:
The Job Centre – Tuesdays by pre-booked appointment
Citizens Advice Bureau – Mondays by pre-booked appointment
OASIS leaflet
Whether someone needs help navigating benefits, understanding care options for themselves or a loved one, or simply wants to know what support is available locally, the OASIS team is there to help.
Stephen Allen, Information & Advice Outreach Officer for Age UK Norwich said:
“Many people don’t realise the range of support available to them, or they may feel unsure about where to start. OASIS is here to offer friendly, confidential guidance and practical help to older adults across Lowestoft. We’d encourage anyone who thinks they may benefit, or anyone supporting an older relative or neighbour, to get in touch.”
The service works closely with local partners including Citizens Advice Bureau to ensure people can access the right support as early as possible.
