Book NowBuilding Futures: A Great Yarmouth Business Breakfast
On a lovely autumn morning, delegates joined the chamber for a Great Yarmouth Business Breakfast on Building Futures at the Imperial Hotel on Wednesday 6 November. Delegates took advantage of the networking opportunities before hearing from our two key speakers. Richard Gawthorpe, Managing Director of Beattie Passive Norse & Julia Howard, Director of Strategic Development of Great Yarmouth College delivered a fantastic presentation on a new cutting edge construction project involving local business, suppliers and young people.
Richard Gawthorpe set the scene by looking at the UK as a whole with unemployment at 2.51 million. He continued by informing delegates of the launch of the new housing development project, a sustainable community business model launched on the 14 June 2013. The project, working with the college students involves 12 brand new homes with a completion date of 31 March 2014. Julia Howard followed, sharing the student’s involvement and how this project is giving young people skills and real life experience. Local businesses were encouraged to not only benefit by being in the supply chain, but the keynote speakers engaged delegates thought by asking the question – how can they also develop young people through skills, apprenticeships & work experience in their business. As well as thought provoking, delegates found the presentation interesting and informative as Richard shared how the sustainable housing project means residences can pay only £100 on heating each year.
We also heard from our featured Community Organisation, East Anglia Reserved Forces and Cadet Association. Kristina Carrington spoke about just some of benefits, training and courses on offer to young people including military-orientated & adventurous training, sports, first aid, Duke of Edinburgh & other qualifications in public services & music. It was great to hear how the training and courses are impacting young people’s character, developing skills and their contribution to service in the community. Young people’s involvement has seen a development in identity & responsibility, self discipline, pride, ambition & perseverance.
Heidi Palmer, Dexter Recruitment Ltd and Keith Betts featured in the 60 second spotlight. Heidi and Keith both had the opportunity to talk about their business and what they offer.
The event closed with safari networking, allowing delegates to meet new people and take full advantage of the opportunity to network with other businesses. Our next Great Yarmouth Business Breakfast is scheduled for the 23 January 2014.
