Activate: How to Start a Business
Are you an aspiring entrepreneur with an exciting idea and want to understand how you can create a thriving business?
Have you got a passion that you want to turn into your ‘side hustle’?
Or are you an early-stage startup and want to see if you’re doing things the right way and identify ways to improve your business?
Activate follows the Lean Startup process, creating and developing our idea in short cycles allowing us to gather feedback to influence changes in the business. Taking place one session a week for four weeks, Activate allows you to work through a plan of action in a more interactive and structured way, giving you the time to reflect. The Activate programme has been designed to allow you to work with peers in a similar situation to yourself, allowing you to build your own support network and champion one another.
The Four Week Programme:
Week 1 – 27th April – Ideas & Assumptions
In session one we take a closer look at your idea and understand what value it brings to your customers. Creating a Customer and Product Canvas we can then begin to look at implementing ways that the product and the process of purchase can be more effective; giving you a greater chance of creating an attractive product or service.
Week 2 – 4th May – Customers & Marketing
In session two we begin to examine your targeted customers in more detail. Who are they? Why do they buy from you? How can we best access them? During this session, we will create our own Customer Profiles highlighting who our targeted groups are, and then we will go about creating a Marketing Strategy to best access at the earliest opportunity.
Week 3 – 11th May – Your Operations
In session three we focus more on you, and your ability to create the product or service you are providing. Through the creation of an Operations Map, we will be able to understand what a typical process from start to finish will be for the creation of goods, allowing you to remove clunky actions and streamline the process. Here we also begin to plan how you can remove risks from your operations and accentuate the potential rewards!
Week 4 – 18th May – Business Model & Vision
And finally, in session four, we bring together everything from the previous three sessions and create your Business Model Canvas. Here you will be able to see everything that you will be doing externally (attracting, engaging and communicating with customers) and internally (activities, partners and resources). Once the business model has been created we will then begin to create a Vision and the actions you need to perform to get there.
All of this combines into creating a more visual and accessible business plan, rather than the traditional approach of creating document after document trying to define your business! The team of Innovation Advisors from Hethel Innovation will be there to help guide you through this process, and for continued support following the course. This session will provide you with an overview of what Agile project management is, where it comes from and the potential power it has for small teams. In this workshop, we will be discussing how you can apply Agile to all kinds of project management, and the session will be an interactive experience for you to learn Agile and Scrum Framework concepts. Further, the day will provide you with clear and engaging demonstrations of how Agile methods are used in practice through group activities and personal reflection and we will also share some quick wins with you to help you get started on your Agile journey.

Following the completion of Build a Business in a Day, businesses that meet the following criteria will gain access to a further 6 hours of support:
- You are based in Norfolk or Suffolk, UK
- You are a business that employs less than 250 people.
- You are a business with a turnover of no more than £41m.

HABC Level 2 Food Safety in Catering
This course enables attendees to take personal responsibility for following food safety procedures, keep themselves clean and hygienic, receive and store food safely and prepare, cook and hot hold food safely. By the end of the course, employees who handle food will gain a firm grasp of the importance of food safety systems, techniques and the procedures involved, an appreciation of Food Safety Hazards and the confidence and expertise to deliver food safely to customers. Duration: One-day course (9:00am – 4pm approximately) IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON COVID-19 – PLEASE READ Lunch provided: For full day training courses a lunch with sandwich or salad, crisps and cake or fruit will be provided. Hot drinks and bottle water will be provided but please bring snacks with you at present. This may change dependent on restrictions and when your course will take place. Classroom set up: We are still operating with learners 2 metres apart for your safety and the maximum size is determined on the room. This will be a maximum of 5 learners. Using Instagram and Pinterest for your business
Instagram is becoming the influencers platform of choices and it is one of the fastest growing social media platforms. With new features being added every month it is quickly becoming an essential channel to drive activity and grow your brand. Pinterest is one of the fastest growing e-commerce channels and the unique way that it is set up allows content to be shared and discovered much more easily than other social media platforms. Level 3 Health & Safety in the Workplace – 5th, 7th & 12th October
This course has been designed to ensure that supervisors, owners, team leaders and managers are aware of their health and safety responsibilities in improving the Health and Safety Culture or that of their organisations. It provides an opportunity to look more deeply into general health and safety from a supervisory perspective. At the end of this course, delegates will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the main concepts of health and safety, show awareness of the benefits of a positive health and safety culture, explain the roles and responsibilities of individuals, supervisors and management in health and safety and demonstrate an understanding of health and safety control and improvement strategies available to supervisors. The possibilities of what can be achieved during a 1-5-day sprint are endless! But here are the basics: A design sprint is a process typically 1-5 days long, which allows businesses or teams to address specific challenges and create actionable solutions quickly whilst reducing risk and gaining invaluable feedback. A sprint typically takes over a week, from selecting a challenge to a live interview and demonstration with an early adopter. Not every organisation needs or can allow a whole week to focus on a sprint, and as a result we’ve revised the sprint process to be delivered at a length that suits the organisation, from 1 day to 5 days!
