A recent case reminiscent of ‘The Tinder Swindler’ has once again highlighted the importance of understanding victims and fraudsters. Amie Ford, a Tinder conwoman, defrauded the victim of over £10,000 by manipulating a ‘trusting soul’ with love and a ‘genuine relationship’ before unveiling her box of tricks and elaborate lies.
Needing money for a string of emergencies and stuck in another country, how unlucky can one person get? Well, Amie Ford was supposedly that person; she manipulated a man she met on Tinder who believed they had a ‘genuine romantic relationship’ into sending her money to support her. Over the next 11 months, his world unfolded under a blanket of love.
Amie acted as the victim’s girlfriend to reassure him and explain her failed payments, cheques, loans and unauthorised transactions. Covering her tracks by playing the role of girlfriend and her promises to repay him, the victim continued to support her without realising he was being manipulated. Amie forged correspondence claiming £6,500 had been secured in compensation from Ryanair for her, her aunt, and the victim; believing it to be genuine, he transferred £5,800 to Amie.
The victim, using Tinder, was looking for love; it would be your expectation that the other person is looking for love as well. That is where human error enables fraud, the assumption of looking for the same thing. As the fraudster plays along the victim falls deeper into the trap. The blame lies on the fraudster, but desires cloud the judgement of the victim and can’t see the signs of fraud. It was only when the victim contacted Amie’s aunt, he found out that she knew nothing of the Ryanair compensation or any other correspondence he had received.
Nowadays it’s easy to pretend, people can use AI to create deceptive content appearing to come from somewhere else, that’s why it’s vital to check. If something feels wrong, it very well might be. No matter where the content comes from, taking caution and being aware of risks is necessary.
If something doesn’t feel right or seems too good to be true, don’t ignore the feeling. You don’t have to accuse or confront them, take a step back and speak to someone you trust. Look at the information objectively, and if necessary, obtain professional advice.
After the suspicious behaviour, had the victim conducted a background check on Amie Ford, they may have been made aware of Amie’s financial status and provide an insight into the suspicious parts of Amie’s life that she had hidden from the victim.
