Contract Personnel, one of East Anglia’s largest independent recruitment agencies, decided to donate a number of laptops to The Free School Norwich – based on Surrey Street.
The laptops were surplus to requirements at Contract Personnel – after being used during the pandemic by their consultants at the offices in Norwich, Thetford and Great Yarmouth.
As a result, in order to help the children with their learning and to support a school setting close by to their head office, the company opted to donate the laptops for the pupils to use, at the popular and highly successful co-educational school for children aged 4 – 11 years old.
Alie Najjar, Group Support Manager at Contract Personnel, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for us to support an educational setting very close to our Norwich office.
“We are always keen to help out in the community where we can. I am glad to see that the laptops have been put to good use, and hope they benefit The Free School and offer enhanced learning for the children.”

Last year we asked for initial public views on the development of a masterplan for Gorleston seafront – around 1200 people responded, and we would like to thank everyone that took part.
Now the council is consulting on a draft document based on those responses and discussions with stakeholders like you. We would particularly like your views on a series of proposed actions, covering topics including conservation, accessibility, wayfinding, and events.
Please do take this opportunity to help us shape Gorleston’s future for the next 10 to 15 years. We would also encourage you to pass this invitation on to anyone you think may be interested in feeding back their views.
A Cromer shop manager proved the ‘bearer’ of good news after handing over a giant teddy to lucky four-year-old George Vanni.
Little George won the paw-some toy after winning a ‘guess the name’ competition in the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shop, in Tucker Street.
The contest was part of the store’s carnival week celebrations and his winning entry was the name Smudge.
George, from Northampton, was on holiday in North Norfolk with seven-year-old brother Charlie and grandparents Steve and Trudi.
Mark Buller, EACH relief and support manager for the north and east region, said: “It was my pleasure to present our giant bear to George.
“He was delighted, as you can tell from the picture, and it was also lovely to meet his brother and grandparents.
“Our staff and volunteers got in the spirit, joined in the fun and enjoyed the carnival celebrations.
“As well as running our week-long teddy competition, we also had lots of special offers that proved a hit with customers.”
George is pictured with Mark and Cromer shop volunteer Patricia Goodwin.
The competition raised £125 and Cromer Carnival Week ran from Saturday, 13th August to Friday, 19th August.
Greater Anglia is advising rail passengers to avoid using its trains on Thursday 15 September as 90 per cent of services will not be running due to a train drivers’ strike.
The 24-hour strike – if it goes ahead – will leave Greater Anglia unable to run any services between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street and there will be no services on any branch or regional lines either.
The only services running – all heavily reduced – will be the Norwich-London intercity service, a stopping service between Colchester and London Liverpool Street, the Southend Victoria-London Liverpool Street service and the Stansted Express between Stansted Airport and London.
There will be no rail replacement buses to replace trains not running due to the strike.
Other train companies affected by ASLEF strikes on Thursday 15 September are Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, Great Western Railway, Hull Trains, LNER, London Overground, Northern Trains, Southeastern, TransPennine Express and West Midlands Trains.
Morning services on Friday 16 September will also be affected by the strike, with most services starting later than usual at 7/7.30am. Services should be back to normal by early afternoon.
Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director said: “We are very sorry that once again our customers will be disrupted by strike action, which this time will affect young people back at school or college after the summer break, commuters, business travellers, students travelling back to university and people hoping to enjoy a late summer day out by train.
“With our drivers on strike, we’re only able to run about ten per cent of our usual weekday services, so our advice again is to avoid using our trains.
“The rail industry is working hard to resolve these disputes and talks will continue with ASLEF in an effort to avert the strike.”
Anyone who has booked a ticket to travel on Thursday 15 September can travel on Wednesday 14, Friday 16 or Saturday 17 September instead, swap to another date or get a free refund.
Greater Anglia is currently finalising details of the timetable to operate on Thursday 15 September.
Further information is available from greateranglia.co.uk/strikes which will be updated as details are finalised.
Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO is welcoming 26 new trainees across its offices in Cambridge, Ipswich and Norwich, with 600 joining nationwide.
The trainees will be a combination of school leaver apprentices and university graduates, 11 will join BDO’s Cambridge office, 11 will join the firm’s office in Ipswich, with four based in Norwich. The majority of the trainees will join the firm’s audit practice.
Most of the new trainees will have the opportunity to undertake a level-7 apprenticeship programme, resulting in a qualification equivalent to a master’s degree.
This year, the firm has also hired over 50 industrial placement students to join BDO for 12 months between their second and third year of university, as well as 70 summer interns. As part of its commitment to increasing diversity in the profession, BDO also runs targeted insight programmes aimed at school or college students from lower socio-economic backgrounds and university students from a black heritage.
Applications for the firm’s 2023 graduate and school leaver apprentice programmes will open later this month, with more than 700 positions available nationwide and 30 based across East Anglia.
Peter Harrup, Head of BDO in East Anglia, said: “We’re delighted to welcome this year’s intake of trainees from a wide range of backgrounds, whether that’s school leavers, or university graduates, as well as interns and placement students. East Anglia is home to some of the country’s brightest talent and we’re investing significantly as a firm to provide the career opportunities and pathways that enable young people from all walks of life to access a vibrant and exciting profession, such as accountancy.
“The education of young people has undoubtedly been severely disrupted in the last few years, with both school leavers and graduates having to navigate learning and examinations in very challenging circumstances. Each and every one of them should be extremely proud of their achievements and we look forward to supporting them on what will hopefully be a long and successful career journey at BDO.”
Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, a period of national mourning commenced with the announcement and will continue until the end of the day of the State Funeral, which is to take place at Westminster Abbey at 11am on Monday 19th September 2022. King Charles III has confirmed that this will be a bank holiday.
During this time, the Government has issued guidance and outlined principles for the public, organisations and businesses for observing the mourning period, including information on ceremonial events in central London. This was published Friday 9th September.
It is acknowledged that mourning is very personal, and so the guidance advises that individuals, families, communities, and organisations may want to mark Her Majesty’s passing in their own way. There is no expectation on the public or organisations to observe specific behaviours during the mourning period.
The best source of information is the Government website. In addition, it is expected that your own Local Authority will also be updating their own websites on local arrangements, including any events they may organise which might impact on your business or local travel.
The Royal Household will set out arrangements for Lying-in-State and the State Funeral. Businesses are encouraged to follow further updates on the Government website. and the Royal Website.
MAD-HR statement
As a team, we will now be acknowledging The Queen’s passing in the days ahead, and, given the expectation of national observances, we will keep all clients informed of any temporary disruption to our working pattern. You can read our full statement here.
Hope for Tomorrow is a charity dedicated to reducing many of the stresses and strains associated with cancer care by bringing it closer to patients.
We build, own and maintain mobile cancer care units. The units are able to travel into the heart of communities to deliver cancer care closer to where it is needed, rather than patients having to make long and stressful journeys before and after their treatment.
Currently, Hope for Tomorrow have 15 mobile cancer care units and 13 nurses support vehicles, provided as part of a unique partnership with NHS trusts throughout England. Now we’re launching a brand new unit, named Jewel, and we’d like to invite you to the launch. Jewel will enable cancer treatments to be delivered closer to patients in Great Yarmouth.
Named “Jewel” after the American biologist, cancer researcher, distinguished professor, and top university administrator, Jewel Plummer Cobb. Jewel’s name was selected by employees of
the pharmaceutical company, Bristol Myers Squibb – who generously funded the unit.
Hope for Tomorrow are officially launching this wonderful new unit on Thursday 29th September at the Louise Hamilton Centre in the James
Paget University Hospital, Great Yarmouth, NR31 6LA. We would love it if you would join us between 11:30am and 1:30pm to celebrate and learn a little bit more about Jewel.

A scheme which will help get people into apprenticeships in small businesses in Norfolk and Suffolk has been launched by New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership.
The Apprenticeship Levy Transfer Pool is being set up in partnership with Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils and will help transfer unspent apprenticeship levy payments from levy payers to small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) in the area.
Levy payers with unspent levy need to be identified and encouraged to allocate some or all of their unspent levy to a virtual pot. Any preferred use of their funds – a certain apprenticeship standard, sector, location – will be identified at this stage.
The LEP or an endorsed partner will then source businesses direct or through an apprenticeship provider that has potential apprentices who are looking to ‘receive’ the funds. An introduction will be made and if all parties, including the training provider, are happy with the match, funds can start to be transferred.
New Anglia LEP is working with businesses, colleges and universities in the region to identify potential opportunities and a budget of £120,000 has been allocated to fund the development of the New Anglia Apprenticeship Levy Transfer Pool.
Chris Starkie, chief executive of New Anglia LEP, said: “Intervention is required in order to boost the number of apprenticeship starts, particularly among SMEs which make up the vast majority of employers in the area.
“This scheme is part of a wider series of actions designed to support apprenticeships across Norfolk and Suffolk and it is essential there is a coordinated approach across stakeholders. This will ensure we can maximise opportunities and prevent employers being engaged multiple times by different stakeholders.”
Natasha Waller, Skills Manager for New Anglia LEP, said: “This will be a massive boost for apprenticeships and training at a time when these opportunities are dwindling. People are central to all of our ambitions and goals and this underlines our commitment to help people of all ages set their aspirations high and open them up to the careers available to them.”
For the initiative to work effectively and to have a significant impact, it needs to be done at scale and with support for both the levy payers – companies with a staffing bill of more than £3 million a year – and the SMEs.
An apprenticeship levy coordinator has been appointed by the LEP and this post will be funded for the two years of the programme.

Greater Anglia’s Norwich Crown Point Depot is celebrating 40 years of servicing Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex’s trains.
The depot, which employs over 100 staff, has seen many changes over the years, most recently undergoing an extensive redevelopment to accommodate Greater Anglia’s new train fleet.
The work began in 2018, with Greater Anglia investing over £80 million in the project to transform the depot with better facilities to maintain and clean the company’s 58 new Stadler trains, as well as a new train washing facility, improved servicing equipment and the ability to store and dispense more fuel.
The work included the installation of an £8.7 million new bogie drop facility – which allows engineers to repair, remove and replace components on the underneath of train carriages, such as the wheelsets and underframe equipment. New equipment transfer turntables and support offices were also added.
Greater Anglia now operates the depot in partnership with Stadler, the manufacturer of the new fleet of trains.
The landmark project ushered in a new era for the region’s railways and secured the depot’s future with train maintenance expertise staying in Norwich to continue the city’s long-standing crucial role in the delivery of the region’s train service.
That presence is valuable to the local and regional economy, with benefits for Norwich and Norfolk both from having employees based at the depot and from the linked supply chain.
Greater Anglia’s Managing Director, Jamie Burles, said, “The depot has been vital to ensuring we provide the best possible service to passengers across East Anglia since 1982 and will continue to play that crucial role well into the future.
“The team there does a fantastic job day-in, day-out, and I would like to thank them for their dedication to providing a reliable and punctual train service for the region.”
Crown Point Depot was officially opened on 27 October 1982, by the chairman of the British Railways Board, Peter Parker.
It replaced Norwich engine shed and allowed InterCity trains that had been serviced at Great Yarmouth to move to a central location. It was electrified in 1985, along with the Great Eastern Main Line.
As part of the privatisation of British Rail, in 1997, it was taken over by Anglia Railways. It has since passed with the East Anglia franchise to One Railway, National Express East Anglia and now Greater Anglia.
New branding is due to be unveiled to mark the depot’s 40th birthday and the completion of the redevelopment work.
