Following previous water-system improvements at this historic Norfolk property, Allstar Systems was commissioned to renovate one of its principal bathrooms.

Measuring approximately five by three metres, the room forms part of a 16th-century Tudor hall. The client’s brief was clear: deliver the comfort and reliability of a modern luxury bathroom while meticulously preserving the building’s traditional character and charming irregularities.

Project Overview

Understanding the Client’s Vision

The clients carefully selected and supplied the primary bathroom fittings, including a stunning traditional copper bath. Our role was to prepare the room structurally and integrate these elements into a practical, durable, and cohesive installation.

The design required a delicate balance. It needed to provide the cutting-edge waterproofing and performance expected of a contemporary space, without relying on overly precise finishes or perfectly flat walls that would look jarring in a centuries-old property.

Structural Preparation & Masonry Repairs

Working with a historic property requires a highly specialized approach where existing materials, historic movement, and natural irregularities must be addressed before applying new finishes.

• Replacing Defective Flooring: Upon inspection, previous floor alterations proved unsuitable. We removed the defective layers and constructed a new, solid deck to guarantee a firm foundation—a critical step for ensuring the stability and drainage of the new walk-in shower.

• Stabilising Historic Brickwork: We identified significant cracks and signs of historic movement in sections of the old masonry. Using steel reinforcing bars and specialist grout, we successfully stabilized the substrate before installing new wall finishes or heavy bathroom fittings.

Integrating Modern Luxury

Despite its historic setting, the bathroom was upgraded to meet the highest modern standards of comfort and utility.

• Waterproof Shower Area: A spacious walk-in shower features a sleek linear drain, creating an understated look that complements the room’s proportions. Beneath the surface, a highly reliable Schlüter tanking system protects the shower and surrounding construction from water penetration, paying special attention to vulnerable junctions and corners.

• Statement Copper Bath: Positioned to maximize the generous room dimensions while maintaining clear access to the shower, the traditional copper bath serves as the room’s focal point. We connected it to the property’s recently upgraded hot and cold distribution system, taking full advantage of the high water flow available.

• Essential Services: We installed an electrically heated towel rail, practical illumination, and a mechanical extraction system to manage moisture. All services were discreetly positioned to support everyday use without dominating the room’s heritage aesthetic.

Preserving the Tudor Character

Rather than forcing modern perfection onto an ancient structure, we embraced the building’s history. The walls were finished with lime plaster featuring a deliberately textured appearance. By retaining subtle waves and natural variations, the finished bathroom feels like an organic extension of the Tudor hall, rather than a modern box placed inside an old structure.
