NEBOSH General Certificate: Is It Worth It?

If you’ve been looking at health and safety qualifications, you’ve probably come across the NEBOSH National General Certificate. And then you’ve probably looked at the time involved, the assessments and the cost and wondered:

Is it actually worth doing?

It’s a fair question. A NEBOSH qualification is an investment, both financially and in terms of your time. So before signing up, you should understand what you’re going to get from it.

What is the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is one of the most widely recognised health and safety qualifications in the UK.

It’s designed to give you a practical understanding of how health and safety should be managed in the workplace. That includes understanding how to identify hazards, assess and manage risks and improve health and safety within an organisation.

It’s useful for people who already have health and safety responsibilities, but you don’t need to be working as a dedicated health and safety professional to benefit from it.

Who is it useful for?

We see people from all sorts of roles complete the General Certificate.

You might be:

• A manager with responsibility for a team

• An Operations Manager

• Working within HR

• Responsible for facilities

• Someone who has gradually taken on health and safety responsibilities

• Looking to move into a dedicated health and safety role

You don’t need “Health & Safety” written in your job title.

If you’re responsible for making decisions that could affect people’s health and safety at work, the knowledge you gain can be incredibly useful.

What will you actually get from it?

The biggest benefit isn’t simply having another qualification to add to your CV. It’s understanding why things need to be done.

Rather than completing a risk assessment because somebody told you one was needed, you begin to understand what you’re looking for and why it matters.

Rather than relying on somebody else to tell you whether something is a problem, you have the knowledge to ask better questions. That can give you much more confidence when dealing with health and safety in your day-to-day role.

Is NEBOSH difficult?

We won’t pretend you can turn up, sit through the course and automatically walk away with a qualification. There is work involved. You’ll be learning new concepts, terminology and ways of thinking about workplace risk. But you don’t need to arrive as a health and safety expert. 

A good learning provider should help you understand the subject rather than simply teaching you how to pass an assessment.

Will it help my career?

If you’re looking to develop a career within health and safety, the General Certificate is a well-recognised qualification and can provide an important foundation for further development. But career progression isn’t the only reason to do it.

For many learners, the benefit is being better equipped to manage the responsibilities they already have. Perhaps health and safety has become a bigger part of your role. Maybe your organisation wants to develop more knowledge internally. Or perhaps you’ve realised there are gaps in your own understanding that you’d like to address. All of those are perfectly good reasons to consider NEBOSH.

So, is it worth it?

If health and safety forms a meaningful part of your role, or you’d like it to in the future, we’d say yes. But don’t choose a course simply because you want the letters on your CV.

Choose it because you want to understand health and safety better and be able to put that knowledge into practice.
