I argue that although is a remarkable research tool we shouldn’t let it do the hard work of writing for us. Writing is the primary medium through which we think deeply, through we can pause, deliberate, and order our thoughts.
The world is difficult, and thinking is difficult. And so writing is necessarily laborious. But when we are writing we are free, able to exercise our unique capacity for reason and reflection. Through good writing we explore what it is to be human. It’s a skill that’s hard to cultivate, and easy to lose. Not thinking is easier than thinking. Clicking a button in a chatbot is easier than thinking.
The 25 or so essays collected here seek to illuminate that sentiment from multiple perspectives, in dialogue with new research on how we’re using AI, recent commentary, and the philosophy of language.
