There are three new lions in Suffolk – and visitors can meet them at Africa Alive this May half-term.
Africa Alive has welcomed three male lions, Will, Bertie and Mak, who arrived from ZSL Whipsnade Zoo on Tuesday 12th May 2026.
The trio are Northern lions, a different subspecies to those previously cared for at the park.
Will, Bertie and Mak are already settling into their new habitat under the careful supervision of the animal care team, and are expected to take their first steps outside over the weekend.
Their arrival marks the start of a new era for Africa Alive following the recent loss of its last remaining lion in March 2026 due to age-related health issues.
“We’re thrilled to see the three boys settling in so well,” said Ross Snipp, Zoological Director at Africa Alive. “Lions are one of the world’s most iconic species, but they face growing pressures in the wild. By welcoming these Northern lions to Africa Alive, we have an important opportunity to inspire visitors to care about their future and to understand the vital role conservation work plays in protecting them.”
Visitors heading to the Suffolk coast this May half-term will be among the first to see the new arrivals fully active in their habitat. The lions are expected to be a major highlight, offering unforgettable moments for families, wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike.
As ambassadors for their wild counterparts, the Northern lions will help raise awareness of the pressures facing lion populations and the importance of conservation work to protect them.
