Emergency 500kW Temporary Boiler Hire | Allstar Systems
Case Study: Emergency 500 kW Temporary Boiler Installation at Dunston Hall
Client: Dunston Hall, Norwich
When: Easter Bank Holiday Weekend, 2024
The Crisis: Total failure of both ageing boilers, leaving 103 booked guest rooms without heating or hot water.
At 10:00 am on a busy bank holiday Saturday, Allstar Systems received an urgent call. With a fully booked hotel, Dunston Hall’s guest commitments and continued operations were at immediate risk. Within just over an hour, our team was on-site, adapting the existing plant room to connect a massive temporary heating solution to save the weekend.
Emergency-Response Timeline
| Approximate Time | Action Taken |
| 10:00 am | Emergency distress call received. |
| ~11:00 am | Allstar Systems engineers arrived on site. |
| Afternoon | Plant-room pipework altered and temporary connections completed. |
| 6:00 pm | Heating and hot water fully restored (8 hours after initial call). |
| Following Month | Temporary boiler remained operational while permanent repairs were made. |
Assessing and Mobilising the Solution
A hotel of this size experiences massive simultaneous demand across guest bathrooms, kitchens, and communal areas. Our rapid assessment confirmed that a small temporary appliance wouldn’t suffice; the site required a 500 kW capacity to bridge the gap.
Crucially, Allstar Systems deployed its own 500 kW natural-gas temporary boiler. Having this equipment in-house eliminated the severe delays associated with sourcing a third-party hire unit during a bank holiday weekend. The packaged boiler was strategically placed at the rear of the hotel, ensuring a practical route to the plant room while keeping the main guest areas completely clear.
Adapting the Plant Room
The existing installation was not pre-plumbed to accept a temporary boiler. Our engineers quickly reconfigured sections of the plant-room pipework, adapting the former boiler connections to accommodate temporary flow and return hoses.
These hoses were routed between the external boiler and the internal plant room, effectively replacing the unavailable heat source while utilizing the hotel’s established distribution system.
Testing, Commissioning, and Restoration
By 6:00 pm, both heating and hot water were successfully restored. While three room bookings were unfortunately cancelled prior to the restoration, our rapid deployment allowed the hotel to comfortably accommodate the vast majority of its guests during the highly lucrative Easter weekend.
Before going live, the team executed rigorous safety and performance checks:
-
Gas-safety checks
-
Combustion analysis
-
Boiler-control checks
-
Confirmation of heating operation and hot-water recovery
The Outcome & The Value of Planning
The 500 kW temporary unit remained at Dunston Hall for roughly one month, operating safely and flawlessly. This gave the hotel’s contracted maintenance company the critical time needed to repair the permanent boiler plant without interrupting essential guest services.
Why Temporary Boiler Planning Matters: A complete boiler failure cripples a hotel’s operations, especially during fully booked bank holidays when specialist equipment is hard to source. Installing suitable temporary connections in your plant room before an emergency occurs drastically reduces downtime.
