Choosing the Right Digital Marketing Platform Starts with Your Customers
If you’re a business owner, you’ve probably asked yourself a question like this at some point:
“Which digital marketing platform should I be investing in?”
With so many options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Social media, Google Ads, SEO, email marketing and content creation all have their place, but choosing the right one isn’t always straightforward.
One thing I’ve learnt is that there isn’t a single platform that’s right for every business.
The businesses that achieve the best results don’t usually start by asking “Which platform should I use?” Instead, they start by asking a much more important question:
“What do my customers need?”
Start with your customers
Before investing time or money into any marketing channel, I encourage businesses to think about five simple questions:
- Who are your ideal customers?
- Where do they go when looking for the product or service you offer?
- What do you want your marketing to achieve?
- How quickly do you need results?
- How much time can you realistically commit to your marketing?
These questions often provide far more clarity than comparing one platform against another.
Build strong foundations first
In my experience, a business website is often the foundation of an effective digital marketing strategy.
It gives potential customers somewhere to learn about your business, understand what you offer and decide whether they want to contact you.
From there, other marketing channels can support that journey.
For example:
- A Google Business Profile can help local customers find you.
- Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) can improve your visibility in search results over time.
- Google Ads can generate enquiries more quickly.
- Email marketing helps you stay connected with existing customers.
- Social media helps build awareness and trust.
Each channel has a purpose, but they tend to work best when they support strong foundations rather than replace them.
You don’t have to be everywhere
One of the biggest misconceptions in digital marketing is that businesses need to be active on every platform.
In reality, trying to do everything often means nothing gets the attention it deserves.
For many small businesses, it’s better to do a few things consistently and well than to spread your time and budget too thinly.
A practical approach
Whether you are just starting out or reviewing your current marketing strategy, I’d encourage you to take a step back before choosing your next platform.
- Think about your customers
- Think about your goals
- Then choose the marketing channels that genuinely support those objectives.
Marketing doesn’t have to be complicated. A clear strategy and consistent action will usually achieve far more than chasing every new opportunity.
I’ve recently published a free guide exploring the strengths of the main digital marketing platforms and how they work together to support business growth. If you’re currently reviewing your marketing, I hope you find it useful.
