Water Pressure Upgrade for a 16th-Century Tudor Hall in Norfolk
Allstar Systems was commissioned to address poor hot and cold-water performance at a substantial 16th-century Tudor hall in Norfolk. The new homeowners sought reliable water pressure throughout a sprawling historic property that included four bathrooms, two shower rooms, and two cloakrooms, with plans for further expansion.

The Challenge: A Fragmented System
Before recommending equipment, we conducted a detailed survey of every bathroom and water outlet. The assessment revealed an ageing, disjointed system that had been pieced together over many decades.

Hygiene Risks: Multiple cold-water storage cisterns scattered around the hall raised serious concerns regarding water hygiene and potential Legionella risks.

Inadequate Volume: Testing recorded a static incoming pressure of 3.9 bar. While adequate in principle, older 25mm MDPE pipework and massive distribution distances restricted the actual volume of water available when multiple outlets were used simultaneously.

Maintenance Issues: The fragmented layout made the system incredibly difficult to control, isolate, or effectively upgrade.
The Solution: Centralized Power & Performance
To deliver sufficient capacity without compromising the historic building, we designed a centralized system to completely overhaul the property’s distribution network.

Bespoke External Plant Room: Constructed at the rear of the property, this new hub houses two 750-litre Stuart Turner cold-water accumulators and a 54mm cold-water distribution manifold. This specific setup overcomes local supply limitations and comfortably supports simultaneous demand across the estate.

Unvented Cylinders: The existing cylinders were replaced with three direct Joule unvented hot-water cylinders. These supply hot water at mains pressure to distinct zones of the property, ensuring consistent, high-end performance.

Sympathetic Routing: To protect the 1500s architecture, new distribution pipework was routed externally within 100mm ducts and trenches. This approach prevented unnecessary disruption to original timber joists, avoided placing excess weight on the historic structure, and ensured easy future access.
Phase Two: Replacing a Failed Incoming Main
Approximately one year later, Anglian Water identified signs of an underground leak. Further investigation confirmed the old 25mm MDPE main had failed within the grounds—likely due to sharp flint in the soil.

A Robust 500-Metre Upgrade: A replacement route was planned directly from the road to the new accumulator plant room. We laid 500 metres of 63mm MDPE pipe, Water pressure upgrade specialists Norfolk providing a much more suitable supply diameter for the property’s distance and high demands.

Durable Installation: The pipework was purchased in 150-metre coils to minimize vulnerable underground joints. It was laid 800mm deep on a bed of soft sand and protected with durable ducting to defend against the flint-heavy ground conditions.

Safe and Certified: Because the service run exceeded 300 metres, the entire installation was chlorinated before use. Anglian Water inspected and approved the work before connecting the new 63mm supply to the main road network. A 54mm gunmetal Yorkshire stopcock and a commercial water conditioner were also fitted within the plant room for ultimate control.
The Final Result
Since completion in 2021, Allstar Systems plumbing and heating engineers has returned annually to service the system and support the clients with further improvements. The finished installation successfully transformed the property’s plumbing, providing the homeowners with:
