School’s Out for Summer. Is Your Workplace Ready?
For many families, the summer holidays are a time for adventures, days out and making the most of the warmer weather.
For businesses, they’re also a timely reminder to think about workplace security.
When schools break up, children and teenagers naturally spend more time outdoors. Empty yards, construction sites, warehouses, farms and industrial estates can become places to explore, particularly during evenings, weekends and school holidays.
The problem is that what looks interesting to a child can be incredibly dangerous.
Forklift trucks, machinery, chemicals, ladders, tools, open excavations and unsecured buildings all pose serious risks if someone gains access who shouldn’t be there.
It’s not just construction sites
Construction sites often receive the most attention during the summer because the hazards are so visible. However, they’re far from the only workplaces that need to think about security.
Any business with equipment, vehicles, hazardous substances or restricted areas should take a few moments to consider how secure their premises really are.
Ask yourself:
- Could someone gain access to your site after hours?
- Are gates, fences and doors secure?
- Are tools and equipment left outside overnight?
- Could a child easily climb over, under or through a boundary?
Sometimes it’s the small oversights that create the biggest risks. Prevention is always better than reaction
No business wants to deal with the consequences of an avoidable incident.
Taking a proactive approach doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Often, a few simple checks before the holidays begin can significantly reduce the likelihood of unauthorised access and help protect both your premises and the public.
Your 10-minute Summer Workplace Safety Check
Before the school holidays get into full swing, take a few minutes to work through this checklist:
✅ Check gates, fencing and boundary security for any damage or weak points.
✅ Make sure buildings, storage areas and vehicles are locked when not in use.
✅ Store tools, machinery and equipment securely rather than leaving them outside.
✅ Lock away hazardous substances, fuels and chemicals.
✅ Remove or secure ladders and anything that could help someone climb over fences or onto roofs.
✅ Check external lighting, CCTV and alarms are working as expected.
✅ Keep walkways, yards and entrances tidy so potential hazards aren’t left exposed.
✅ Remind staff of end-of-day security procedures before they leave for the evening.
Good health and safety doesn’t stop at the workplace door
Health and safety isn’t only about protecting employees while they’re at work. It’s also about considering the impact your workplace could have on others.
Taking a few simple precautions over the summer can help prevent serious incidents, protect your business and give everyone greater peace of mind.
At Serene Safety, we believe the best health and safety advice is practical, proportionate and easy to put into action. A little preparation now can make all the difference throughout the summer holidays.
