Managing sickness

Why does absence from work matter?

Most employees will need to take sick leave at some point in their working lives. Both physical and mental health problems can count as sickness. Employers must treat mental and physical health as equally important.

Unplanned absence can be unavoidable but gives you no control over work priorities or any time to arrange cover. It can include things such as time off for dependants, but sickness absence is the most common type of unplanned absence that you will need to deal with when managing people.

Effectively addressing sickness absence in organisations can:

  • Reduce absence levels
  • Improve employee morale and wellbeing
  • Boost productivity
  • Save money

Measuring absence

Sickness absence is defined by Acas as any period of time when an employee is unable to work due to illness, injury, or other medical reasons. Accurate measurement and monitoring, identifying trends, and exploring the underlying causes are key to effective absence management.

Do I need an absence policy?

Having clear absence policies can help manage absence in organisations. Policies make it clear what is expected of the employer and their employees if they need time off work. Employers must inform employees of terms and conditions relating to sickness or injury, including sick pay.

Absence policies should cover how planned absence is dealt with:

  • Holiday
  • Maternity, paternity, adoption, or parental leave
  • Time off for medical or hospital appointments

But also, absences that can’t be planned in advance:

  • Sickness
  • Time off for dependants
  • Time off for bereavement
  • When there’s extreme weather or travel disruption

For some areas of absence, there will be a requirement to follow legislation:

  • Statutory sick pay (SSP)
  • Fit notes and proof of sickness
  • Time off for dependants

How do I manage short-term absence?

Return-to-work interviews can help early identification of short-term absence. They also enable managers to start a dialogue about any underlying issues causing the absence. Promoting a positive attendance culture, while emphasising that genuine sickness absence will be supported, can help to ensure non-genuine absence is not tolerated.

Data protection

Organisations should consider data protection rules and confidentiality if they’re recording medical information about employees. For example, if you’re recording the reasons for employees’ sickness absence.

  • Be able to give a reason for keeping this information
  • Make sure you only share it with relevant people

At Lovewell Blake, we can draft your absence policies and support you with any absence issues that arise, so you can make sure they are legally compliant, and your company isn’t exposed to unnecessary risks, as you grow your workforce.

Konectbus Partners with The Guide Dogs to Enhance Accessibility on its buses

Konectbus is proud to announce its latest partnership with Guide Dogs UK to improve accessibility for individuals who are blind or partial sighted when travelling on their buses. This partnership highlights their commitment to creating an inclusive and accessible mode of transport for its passengers.

Konectbus understand the importance Guide Dogs play in providing someone who is Blind or partially sighted with independence. There are over 4,500 working guide dog partnerships in the UK. That is over 4,500 puppies that had to go through vigorous training to be able to guide their handlers with the confidence and the ability to put their trust in these dogs to navigate them in the world safely. That is why as part of the partnership, they are excited to invite the dogs and their trainers onto their buses and offer free bus travel for the guide dog puppies with their handlers.

Jay Baker, Puppy Development Advisor for the area, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to Konectbus for supporting us with this training session. It is important that our pups learn to travel calmly and confidently on different modes of transport, so they are well-prepared for when they hopefully become working guide dogs. Being able to practise bus travel, with support from Konectbus, has been a great training experience for both our pups, and volunteer Puppy Raisers.”

Davina Langley, Head of Marketing and Communications for Konectbus said

This collaboration shows our commitment to making travel easy and independent for everyone and have launched our new initiative ‘Access All Routes’ to make every journey accessible. This initiative will guide future developments of our network and on bus facilities, alongside ensuring that our drivers are provided with the information to support the varying needs of all their passengers.”

Take your team on a safari this year!

This summer, Break, the charity behind GoGoSafari – are calling on local businesses to become part of this exciting adventure by volunteering as Trail Rangers.

From June 23rd to August 30th Norwich and Norfolk will host a captivating art trail featuring 50 large animal sculptures, including gorillas, giraffes, and lions, designed by local artists and sponsored by businesses. But to make this incredible event possible, volunteers are urgently needed.

Supported by Stevensons, volunteer Trail Rangers will play a vital role in creating a memorable experience for trailgoers, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for any business to engage their team, support a local charity, and have fun while making a difference. Roles include keeping the sculptures looking their best whilst out on the trail, to getting behind the scenes and assisting  with the installation, or meeting trailgoers at the Safari Hub or pop-up fundraising events. There’s even the opportunity for a corporate take over day for any businesses interested.

“Volunteers are absolutely vital to bringing GoGoSafari to life,” says Tracey Warnes, Volunteer Lead at Break. “This is a wonderful opportunity for businesses who want something different to usual team building days and be involved something exciting, all while supporting a cause that makes a real difference to young people in care. Whether you can spare a few hours, a day or several days, every contribution counts and we’ve got roles that will suit everyone!”

To learn more about how you, or your team, could join the Trail Rangers, Break are holding two information events one on February 20th at Chantry Place (10am–2pm) and one on February 25th at The Forum (10am–3pm). Or you can visit break-charity.org/gogovolunteer to find out more and sign up.

GoGoSafari is delivered by local charity Break in partnership with Wild in Art, the Zoological Society of East Anglia, alongside Norwich BID and Chantry Place. This will be the fifth trail that Break has brought to Norwich and Norfolk, and it’s set to be the biggest and most exciting one yet!
