Skills at Breakfast in Great Yarmouth At our Business Breakfast in Great Yarmouth on 3rd May we not only heard about Skills for Growth but also saw them in action in the Ambitions Restaurant at Great Yarmouth College. Penny Wycherley, Principal at the college spoke about how they aim to raise the aspirations of the people of Great Yarmouth area to achieve their potential. Work based learning is a key part of Great Yarmouth College and the Ambitions restaurant is a key way that students can learn in a real working environment. The Chamber delegates were served a delicious breakfast by students at the college as part of their learning. We then heard from Gary Williams, Director of E-tech Group who reiterated the importance of skills and training for the employer’s perspective. He gave the example of his own company in which there are far more older employees than younger which means that there are not enough young employees to fill the jobs as more people retire. He talked about the many benefits of training such as increasing profits, improving customer service, enhancing productivity, reducing costs and getting fresh ideas which is very thought provoking for all companies. The Art of Brain Friendly Training

About Carl:

Carl has nearly 15 years’ of experience in learning and development, within the commercial sector, working for TIPS for Good Management. He holds a Certificate in Training Practice and is passionate about the companies unique ‘Brain Friendly Training’ initiative. He is well practiced in accelerated learning techniques and adopts this Brain Friendly approach to every single design and delivery opportunity. He is passionate and enthusiastic about working with other people to impart these knowledge and skills and help spread the word about BFT! It is from this experience that he lives by the following philosophy to training and development. Firstly, it should be fun! It should be beneficial to the learner and to the organization. Level 3 Health & Safety in the Workplace

This course has been designed to ensure that supervisors, owners, team leaders and managers are aware of their health and safety responsibilities in improving health and safety culture or that of their organisations. It provides an opportunity to look more deeply into general health and safety from a supervisory perspective.

At the end of this course, delegates will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the main concepts of health and safety, show awareness of the benefits of a positive health and safety culture, explain the roles and responsibilities of individuals, supervisors and management in health and safety and demonstrate an understanding of health and safety control and improvement strategies available to supervisors.

Equipment: No equipment is necessary for you to bring to the course. Pens and note paper will be available.

Lunch provided: Lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the course.

There will be a gap between days two and three of the course for delegates to revise from the book given during the course. Subject to passing a multiple choice exam paper delegates will be awarded the Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace.

Norwich Business Breakfast

On 30 May Charles Bean, Bank of England spoke to a packed Norfolk Chamber Breakfast at Norwich City Football Club. It was a terrific opportunity for him to speak with local business people and it is great that the Chamber are able to bring their members closer to organisations such as the Bank of England.

Opportunties 2012

Our brand new and exciting ‘Opportunities 2012’ event on 15 March, which brought buyers and suppliers together under one roof at Norwich City Football Club, was a huge success.

With over 70 exhibitors over two floors, both the Top of the Terrace and the Norfolk Lounge were full with stands. Feedback during the day from exhibitors was that the event had a real buzz and presented them with a great opportunity to showcase their innovative products and services to the business community.

Exhibitors tried to be as eye catching as possible by having interactive stands or great giveaways. Bramley Lakes received a lot of attentions by bringing an off-road segway vehicle in for demonstration as part of their team building days, and Kinnerton were handing out free chocolate samples…always a popular choice! In addition to the exhibitors, there were a series of ‘drop in’, bitesize, topical workshops. Each workshop was aimed at improving and enhancing business knowledge with practical, take-home advice. The most popular proved to be based on the subject of social media, with Duncan Johnson from Yodelay delivering a workshop on Social Engine Optimisation and Sean Clark from Soak Social filling us in on the 10 most effective ways to use social media in business.

The resounding success of the day was the Open4Business/Meet the Buyer event – where local companies booked one-to-one appointments with key procurement officers and buyers from a range of both public and private sector companies to pitch their products and services. The 29 buyers, including Bernard Matthews, QD and Wherry Housing, created an amazing 569 appointments, of which over 89% were booked!

A big thank you to everyone who sponsored, supported and attended the event. The day was clear proof that Norfolk is buying and selling and hugely positive about taking advantage of every business opportunity.
