How do I use LinkedIn to find a new job?

LinkedIn is a bustling social media platform and the largest professional social network – but is it essential for finding a job?

The short answer is yes. With over 58 million companies using LinkedIn, we believe it’s worthwhile having a profile that makes you stand out from the crowd.

What are the benefits of having a LinkedIn profile? As well as showcasing your skills, you can build a valuable online network, meet new people, discover fantastic recruitment agencies to support your job search, and find out more about the businesses you might be interested in working with.

Our Recruitment Director and co-founder of R13, Ruth Harding gives her expert insight on how to use LinkedIn to find a new job. Here are Ruth’s three top tips:

Show that you’re open to work

Under the ‘Jobs’ tab in the platform, you will find a section called ‘Open to Work’. Once activated, this will be visible to potential employers, agencies and anyone in your network who is actively recruiting.

Use your ‘About’ section to offer further details on what you are looking for, and what you could bring to a job. Don’t be afraid to talk about your potential, and be confident. Avoid negative terms such as ‘unemployed’ – try switching this for ‘seeking a new career opportunity’, showing potential recruiters, employers that you are looking for work.

Actively post on the platform

What can I post about? The first post is always the hardest. Ease yourself in by spending some time engaging with your network. Comment on other people’s posts, share articles that interest you and take notes on any inspiration you find.

When you’re ready to post, try taking a nice selfie and introducing yourself to your followers. Mention some of your top skills, and include a fun fact about yourself, providing that all important personal touch. Finish it off with a couple of hashtags that are relevant to your skills, and just go for it!

Whilst it’s great to be authentic and open on your LinkedIn, it’s best to stay away from heated debates and controversial topics. Being yourself is key, as that’s what people buy into and follow – but always keep it professional. When it comes to finding a job, we are firm believers that working with a recruitment agency is the most effective way to reach your career potential. But there is more to LinkedIn than job searching, and having a well put together profile provides a great deal of benefits. What have you got to lose?
